Connectin an access point to Cisco 837

Can I connect a wireless Access point to one of the ethernet port on a cisco router 837?. so i could use my laptop around the house

There should be no reason why you can't. Assign an IP Address/SNM to the ethernet port on the router as per normal and then on the W-AP issue a static IP within the range of the routers subnet (next available) and then on the AP enable DHCP with a scope range of the subnet minus the static one issued to the AP and ethernet port.
