Connecting UPSs to other UPSs

By bunkee ·
What issues must one take into account if thinking about connecting an enterprise UPS solution to another UPS device that are providing power to servers? The scenario would be [ENTERPRISE UPS] -> [UPS] -> [SERVER] with no generator system in place.

APC White Paper

by TheChas In reply to Connecting UPSs to other ...

APC published a white paper on why it is bad to connect 2 UPS systems together.

Basically, the take is that since a UPS does not output a sine wave when running off of the battery, any connected UPS starts to run off of it's battery right away. The net result is little or no increase in run-time.

There are ways around this. But, they all decrease overall efficiency and may not provide any additional run-time.

If you have specific systems that need to have a longer run-time then the enterprise UPS provides, your best option would be to set these systems up with their own independent UPS system and plug them into a standard outlet.
