I am wondering if this is due to a recent update that was
downloaded (my Windows 2000 server is setup to receive
      automatic updaes).

Please let me know if you have found a solution as yet.

      Thanks

      DNS check.

make sure that the client is pointing to the correct internal dns server.
check whether you are able to ping the DC/DNS with name as well as IP address, are the names resolving fine ?
check the Netsetup.log file under %system % i believe its under the Debug folder the log file would have the reason for failure, also check for clock skew on client and server.

      Cheers !!!
