To network 2 computers together, would you need a switch? or can you just get 1 network cable and connect it from pc to pc?

You do not need a switch... though it does have its advantages.... you can use a crossover cable or a serial cable to connect two PCs..

I recommend a hub. You can get an inexpensive workgroup hub from a store like Office Depot or Circuit City.

It lets you add another computer later, and more importantly, it makes it easier to add broadband connectivity to your network and let both computers browse the internet at the same time without having to make special configuration settings on one of your computers.

if > 2 pcs or future upgrade, then you need to use a hub/switch, each pc with a NIC and with straight cables.

if only 2 pcs, then you only need 1 crosscable, 2 NIC(each pc 1).

Connect all, then set auto IP and share file and printer.

Wahla. Done.
