copy a dns server and data

By paulnovy ·
Our DNS server is in New York and we are in Washington DC. There is delay on the network due to dns look up. Is there a way to mirror this DNS server on our local file server running windows server 2000? (both systems running windows server 2000) How do I do it easily?

not mirror but you can do a couple of things. Put a Cache DNS server in the Wash DC office or put a fullup DNs server there [ Wash DC becomes a site within Active Directory ] and have replication to NY done during the night when theres no traffic.

Then clients at Wash DC authenticate to the local DNS server instead of going out on the slow link WAN to NY to get authenticated.

I was looking for an easy how-to type of answer. I know it can be of two or three different types of dns.

How to:

Step 1: Install DNS on Washington Server and create a secondary DNS zone for your domain

Step 2: Set DNS replication to only replicate to New York server

That's a basic answer, there are others. Your question could be more involved depending on how your network is physically and logically laid out.

Best advice I can give you is to learn DNS in and out, then evaluate your network.
