cpu freezes

By cheezer ·
I recently added 128mb of crucial memory, which was
8 chips instead of 16 (both sides of module)my other memory modules have the 16 chips, my question; the cpu freezes after a certain time the mouse is frozen as is the keyboard.

Could it be thatthe modules have to have the same amount of chips?

I have to reboot several times, if I leave the cpu on all day.

It seems when I try to get on the net with ie the window opens in ie, bur when I click the dial up connection, it freezes up, could it be ie?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you try taking that RAM out and see if you still have the same problem?
Also, I had a problem with a RAM that had 8 instead of 16 as well. My computer would not recognize that RAM, I bought my RAM from McDonald&Assoc. I called them and they sent me a RAM with 16 chips instead of 8. Works great now! GOOD LUCK!

Yes, some motherboards only accept the older single density DIMMs.

There are also numerous other limitations on DIMMs with some motherboards.

? How much RAM do you have?
And, which version of Windows?

There is a bug in W9X /Me that can cause system problems if more than 511MB of RAM is installed.

Another issue, is the size of your power supply.
As you add RAM, plug-in cards, and drives, you may need to install a larger power supply to run everything.

You seemed to have answered your own question. If the PC performed normal before the mem upgrade then that's more than likely the issue.
I wouldn't mix the memory and there's more to it than just the amount of chips.
For the price of memory these days I'd get another matching stick and put that in.
