crashing, errors and blue screen

By dpenny13 ·
I have an HP with Windows ME.700mhz, 128Mb Ram, 20GB hard drive and MSN is my ISP. I have multiple problems. When im on my computer, i am always on the internet (dialup). I get blue screen error such as (Error : 0E : 0028 : C0030D12). So i have torestart. Occasionally i get blue screen error when i 1st turn on my computer. Everytime im online, pages just stop loading, but im still connected. But if i disconnect and reconnect its fine for awhile. Sometimes my computer just freezes on me.Sometimes my items in my system tray will disappear. This is very frustrating b/c these occur everytime i get on my computer and go online. Can someone tell me is there anything i can do or is this computer a lemon.

Please provide the whole message just as displayed.

The first thing to do is scan for viruses using the latest scan engine and DAT files.

Run msconfig.exe and look at the startup section and see if anything unusual is being loading. Especially things with random names where the letters make no sense at all. You can uncheck the different things for testing and see if any of them make a difference. Also check in the WIN.INI load and run sections to make sure nothings being loaded from there.

If you use Norton Anti-Virus it may be the cause.

The following link is to an article that explains how to resolve this issue.

You can use the system restore feature togo back to a point when the system was working and start from there.

The things to consider is have you added any software or hardware to the PC. There may be updates and or patches for the operating system, internet explorer etc.

Another solution is if this is only happening with internet explorer, try using netscape. If it happens even when off line when is the last time you had a normal shutdown and power up? Try running some diagnostic tools like scandisk and read the log file for errors. clean up the hard drive erasing your temporary files for both the internet and temp directories. You can always reload the operating system but that may or may not help you. How much free disk space do you have? If antivirus scanning does not fix your machine try nortons windoctor in the norton systemworks package. www.9software.com sells it for $11 for the pro edition.
Good luck

Another possible culprit is MSN instant messaging, I've found on 3 different machines I have nothing but trouble and General fault protection errors after my son installs it on them.( he now has his own pc and can deal with it himself.) try uninstalling that if it's running and see if the problem goes away. You may want to reload the latest and greatest from MSN of internet explorer and instant messaging if you use them.

I have also seen several of the "Ad-Ware" or "Spy-Ware" applications that are out there all over the place just now causing troubles like this. If you use any of the file sharing programs you are doubly at risk. I would recommend getting Ad-Aware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

If this does not help (and assuming your hardware is okay), I would consider removing your browser software and re-installing a new version (with the latest patches, etc).

After that, I'd consider reinstalling myTCP/IP stack in case something has gotten corrupted there.

Lastly, it's possible your computer is a lemon (however unlikely), but I do think that Windows ME *IS* a lemon. I would recommend moving to a superior OS like 2000 or XP...that move aloneshould greatly reduce the errors and crashes you will face.

Good luck!

Check all of your USB devices, make sure there are no problems with them. I had the same symptoms and it turned out My Intelli Eye USB mouse was having intermittent problems. It would work for a while and then problems. After a restart it might workfor awhile then the same thing over again. I upgraded to XP from ME and XP told me I was having A USB device malfunctioning.

You say you sometimes get a blue screen on bootup - this could be caused by a problem driver, goto www.hp.com and update your modem driver.
Also if this doesnt work try updating the rest of your drivers.
Another possibility could be faulty RAM butthis I doubt.
