Data Back up problem

By soumya ·
I am faced with a very tricky situation. Onme of my customer has recently been taken over. This company use Linux as their OS. The company that has taken over use Microsoft. Now, the problem is that they have to share the data. So it is required that the data that was backed uo in a Linux environment is now extracted in windows environment. The problem is that all back up software sits on the respective OS & thus is OS dependent. Can anybody help me on this?

Does the data still exist on a server somewhere?

If yes, then you need to get the data via FTP and essentially grab it into the Windows environment.

If no, then you need to recreate the linux box and restore the backup... and grab the databy FTPing into that box.

There may be other alternatives, but it'll depend on the version of linux and the type of data that you are talking about.

What kind of data are you talking about? Is it Oracle? Access? Plain-old-flat-files?

You can use scp (there are free windows clients available) or even CIFS / Samba sharing to allow you to copy the files around.
