Date and Time Synchronization in a Domain

By harrisdy ·
Hi guys,

I've been trying to get my XP Pro to synchronize the date & time with my DC but I can't seem to figure it out.

1 DC in an Active Directory Domain
3 XP Pro clients connecting to DC

The system time in the XP clients are wrong but the system time in DC is correct. DC only relies to CMOS as I dont have external source of time. But clients can still log in fine. When I try to stop the Windows Time service, then offset the time in XP, then start the service again and resync, it always resync to the wrong time... Which obviously is coming from the DC, but it is not the time displayed in the System time. Now for the sake of correcting the time, I just turned off Windows Time service and manually adjusted the system time of the XP clients.

Is there a way to synchronize the time between the server and clients OR atleast an explanation to the scenario above?

Thanks in advance.

should do it automatically

it should really do it automatically. is there any pattern to how they are off? that is, if there is a wrong timezone are they all off by exactly x hours, or are they all randomly off?

they are off by exactly same hours...

all XP clients are off by same x hours from the server. when I logon to clients, all the system time are the same for users. so that made me conclude that there is a sync happening, it's just that its wrong with respect to server's system time.

btw, this network is done in VMware Workstation. does it have an effect somehow?

time zone settings

It seems that the time zone settings on server is not matching with that of the Desktops.

you are correct...

after changing the time zones in the XP to match the server, it is now synchronizing with the right time.

now I'm more confused... which time does the XP machine synchronize with before I changed the time zone to match the server? I mean, if I have another DC in a site with a different time zone, will I set the time zone to that site or with the root DC? How about the Clients on the site at the different time zone? I know time sync is important on some applications as well as AD replication but I'm just a little confused.

Thanks for the help.

You could try these out and see if they do the job for your time issue.
