DC Move

By stephen.doyle ·
Hi All.
I have an old DC( the only one) on an old domain with a database which is needed by the client pc's. I'm about to move all the client pc's to a new domain which has a new DC on it already. I want to demote the old DC from the old domain and join it to the new domain as a simple member server so that the client pc's can continue to use the database after the move. What is the best way to do this?
Thanks.

Not a problem.

First get the PCs moved to the new domain.

Next run DCPROMO and demote the old server. You will tell it that this is the last DC in the domain so that it will get rid of teh domain completely.

Next join the server to the new domain.
Set security on the Database share so that the correct people have access to the data.

Now, if this is a SQL database things will be a bit more complicated. You'll need to know the SA password so that you can recreate the security on the database usign the new domain security groups.

Hope this helps.
