DC on VMWare

By takoma ·
I have a windows XP computer on the network with VMWare installed. I also have windows server 2K3 installed on the vertual machine, and would like to create a seperate domain for R&amp testing. When I set up Win 2K3 as a DC, I don't want it to join the current Domain. However, I would like both domains to trust each other. Is this possible, and how do I do it?

New domain

First you will need to set up a new DNS zone with a different FQDN from the original domain or even set up a child domain.

When you run DCPromo it will ask you if you want a new domain or join an existing domain, select a new domain and/or a new forest. You would set up a new forest is completely different from the original forest otherwise you could set up a child domain using a sub domain.

DNS zone

by takoma In reply to New domain

Thanks for the info you provided. I am getting a better understanding on what needs to be done. Just so you know, I would like to set up this seperate domain for development and testing purposes. I do not want to use the production domain's Active Directory to do testing. I do have a couple of questions about setting up the DNS for this domain. I would like the make sure that this new domain has it's own DNS. So I will install DNS server on the DC which I will setup for it. However, in order for there to be communication between both the production domain and this new domain, is it necessary to set up a DNS Zone on the DNS server of the production domain?
