Default User Name at Xp Pro login

by cjoudry . Updated 17 years, 3 months ago

Our organization currently runs a 2003 windows server with xp pro workstations. We also run Faronics Deep Freeze Standard on our machines. In our setup the same user uses the same computer 99% of the time.

Our current process for software updates is to logon to the user’s machine (with their login/pass), set to thaw (deep freeze), reboot, login again as them, perform the updates, and freeze the machines on next boot.

The reason we login as them is so that their login name is always the default name and all they have to do every morning is type in their password and away they go. The login user name is always the last recorded successful login by a user, this is stored somewhere in windows, and deep freeze locks it in every time the machine gets frozen.

I would prefer to code, script, or otherwise configure windows to display a specific user name at the login screen. This would allow me to updates more efficiently as I can use the administrator password/login and refreeze without concern of the default name in the user login screen. It would also allow users to keep their passwords private.

Can anyone provide me any information as to how to accomplish this much needed change?
