Question

Locked

Default User Name at Xp Pro login

By cjoudry ·
Our organization currently runs a 2003 windows server with xp pro workstations. We also run Faronics Deep Freeze Standard on our machines. In our setup the same user uses the same computer 99% of the time.

Our current process for software updates is to logon to the user's machine (with their login/pass), set to thaw (deep freeze), reboot, login again as them, perform the updates, and freeze the machines on next boot.

The reason we login as them is so that their login name is always the default name and all they have to do every morning is type in their password and away they go. The login user name is always the last recorded successful login by a user, this is stored somewhere in windows, and deep freeze locks it in every time the machine gets frozen.

I would prefer to code, script, or otherwise configure windows to display a specific user name at the login screen. This would allow me to updates more efficiently as I can use the administrator password/login and refreeze without concern of the default name in the user login screen. It would also allow users to keep their passwords private.

Can anyone provide me any information as to how to accomplish this much needed change?

Have you asked Faronics about this? I would think that you should be able to setup an update server that would automatically update the computers without you logging in and out. Maybe Faronics has a script that you could run that would allow the update server to update without you having to set it to thaw. Good Luck.

It is a rather old post, but the easiest way is a reg file

Something like this can be run once or more often as needed. You could save it as a autologon.reg file

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"AutoAdminLogon"="1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DefaultDomainName"="Your-DOMAIN"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DefaultUserName"="UserName"

If you look in Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

There is a value called "DefaultUserName" if you write a script to export it then re-import it just before you re-freeze the machine it should use that as the default username.
