Definitions not updating for Symantec Scan Engine 5.1

By gman ·
I've got several questions about the Symantec Scan Engine. I've posted these questions to Symantec and still waiting on answers.

I have a Windows 2003 server with Symantec Scan Engine and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Client. The Symantec Scan Engine is performing Content Filtering duty.

According to Symantec at the i32 executable file for 32-bit client installations is used to update SAV Corp. clients and the x86 executable file for 32-bit client installations is used for Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine for Windows(again, is this same as Symantec Scan Engine?)

Could someone tell me if I've been using the i32 executable definition for 32-bit client installations all along and then try to run the x86 executable definition for 32-bit client installations would that cause a problem? (I am getting an "ntvdm encountered a hard error" when I try to). (The i32 executable does not produce this error only the x86 executable.)

Is Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine for Windows the same thing as the Symantec Scan Engine?

Is it true that the Symantec Scan Engine needs the -x86 update? If the Symantec Scan Engine can use the i32 update, (I can look into 16-bit application issue later ) than what I need to do is fix why the Scan Engine is not updating it's definitions.

Where exactly does the Scan Engine get the updates from?

When I log into the Symantec Scan Engine 5.1 web page and select Home on the left side of the page the "Date of Virus Definitions" is May of 2008. The Symantec AntiVirus Client's (Corp.Edition definition is dated Feb 11, 2010.

This system (and a few others) are on isolated networks and so the defintions have to be run manually.

I tried this Symantec fix yesterday but when I checked this morning the Scan Engine still did not update. ,

There is a C:\Program FIles\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs directory which has the subfolders and files including two dated folders, 20070820.48 and 20100211.002. I did not do anything with this directory yet. There is also a C:\Program FIles\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Definitions\AntiVirus\VirusDefs.

Thanks in advance.
