Defraging computer

By jrgus ·
I have tried to defrag my computer and I get a defrag error message. Tried to scan disk also, no help. Even reinstalled window 98. What else can I do. Thanks, Jim

Boot to safe mode and run these programs.

If there's any kind of TSR activity (a Anti-Virus program, network activity, screen savers counting, etc), the defrag will report that the drive's contents have changed and it will restart (same with scandisk).

Stop all programs (aside from Windows) before starting scandisk/defrag or boot to safe mode and run them.

CTRL-ALT-del will give a good showing of what's running, the explorere and system tray are the only 2 you want when running scandisk/defrag. Also I'ld download adaware from lavasoft.com to remove spyware before starting. If you're networked, safe mode booting is probably the best option. Good Luck

I agree with the booting into safe mode By hitting F8 during the windows boot process, also wth the ctrl+alt+del to get the overlay of what is running in the background, if you know what program is causing the error i would try shutting that down toget it to work in real mode.

First off, did you reinstall Windows 98 over the existing OS? If so, back up everything you have and then format the hard drive. Once done, install the OS again from scratch.
