Dell Dimension 4700

By gpeyser1 ·
My computer will not bootup since a recent thunder storm. The light on the front of the computer is flashing an amber color. I checked all the power connections to the motherboard and all are securely attached. Could the motherboard or power supply be bad?

Start with swapping the power supply out. If you are lucky, the PS took the hit and not the motherboard. If that doesnt fix it then you may want to get a local professional to help you out with testing different peripherials like sound card, video card, memory.

Invest in a small UPS

A nearby lighning strike will ravage an older home without proper grounding. Hopefully it was the P/S that took the hit and nothing else. It could have fried the whole kit and kabootle as they say. The UPS needs a good ground and it will provide the protection you need from future damage.

Oddly enough the computer was hooked up to a UPS. The UPS still works fine. Tried another Power supply but still nothing.

the flashing amber light in the power button indicates a bad power supply.
