demons in cdrom drive

By mcneeseg ·
I have 3 (out of 20 total) Dell Dimension L733R pcs that have gone crazy. The cdrom drives open and close repeatedly at random times. Any ideas???

You don't have "demons" - You have "trojans".

Trojan.MultiJoke is characterized by a great number of effects that alert users to the fact that something really strange is going on. It performs these actions at random at some regular time intervals. These actions appear to be carried out by a malicious user through a remote access to the infected computer. It can carry out the following actions:

It opens and closes the CD-ROM tray.

It reverses the mouse buttons.

Light effects on thekeyboard.

Change of Windows wallpaper.

Activates the Windows start button.

Hides the task bar.

etc...

I went to the Panda website and checked out the info on the Trojan.MultiJoke and the Trojan.MultiJoke.B. Even though it sounds like a virus, it doesn't appear to be either of these. I didn't see any of the registry entries or file names related to these viruses. I use Norton Antivirus and all definitions are up to date. Any more ideas?

You may have dirty connections to the drive or a bad drive. Try replacing the drive and cable with a known good drive.

I've already tried that. I put a known good drive in one of the machines that were causing a problem. I also put one of the bad drives in my computer. I've never had any cdrom problems with mine. I'm waiting to see what happens. So far both of thesemachines are behaving while the others are still misbehaving. All connections have been checked.

When you say "the connections have been checked" does that mean unplug and replug or spray with a good contact cleaner and reconnect?

Unplugged and replugged. I called Dell and they are going to replace the drives since I am still under warranty.
