Desktop/System Errors

by dharrison . Updated 23 years, 11 months ago

I have a client that came into the office to find their PC not working right. They tried to reboot the machine – but received many errors – of course they didn’t write them all down. The one written down was Internet Explorer cannot find the Active Desktop HTML file. This file is needed for your Active Desktop. To turn off Active Desktop, click ok.

All desktop icons are gone, email settings & mail, and start menu items are gone.

We now have the active desktop running and have reset all of her program icons and fixed the apps. that weren’t opening correctly. I had her run a scan disk and repair all errors found.

Now we see folders off the root of C – named dir0000, dir0004 etc.- and these seem to hold all of the settings and start menu items.

I tried to just drag these items back to where they belong – but they are displayed using dos names not full (accessories = acceso~1)

Tried to reinstall windows – no luck.

Also – quick launch tool bar won’t open – get an error stating can’t open tool bar.

Any suggestions????
