Devices showing twice in device manager?

By jon_w31 ·
500MHz system with Windows 98SE.
In device manager there are anumber of devices showing up twice. e.g. Floppy drive controller, keyboard, mouse
The second listing of the device has an exclamation mark next to it.
If I click remove on the devices , on restarting windows just loads two of evrything again along with the exclamation marks.
I cannot reload the system as the customer has some very expensive banking software installed by the bank and no backup was supplied.
Please help

Start by having the chipset driver files on the hard drive.
If the download is a ZIP file, extract the archive to a folder that is easy to find.

Remove both sets of duplicated devices from device manager.
In the case of IDE controlers, make sure you remove the root controller.

Upon re-boot, point the driver wizzard to the folder with the chipset driver.
If Windows does not find an updated driver in the driver files, cancel the driver installation.

If needed, run the setup or installation program for the chipset drivers.

This should take care of the problem.
You may need to re-install drivers for the video and other plug-in cards.

This may have come from Windows Update sending a wrong driver update.

Do you have multi partition on your HDD ?
If yes.. Copy all your windows files in a folder named w98flat at partition other than boot partition.. remove all devices form the list and restart. During reinstallation process of all devices it will askfor windows file.. direct it towards your w98flat folder

The problem may be with the .inf files. These are the info files for the system regarding all the system components. You can try updating the .inf files with CD which came along with the motherboard CD.

try out and mail be back.

First delete ALL the items that are duplicated (both copys). During restart go into the BIOS and enable an option called Reset Configuration Data, or similar.

This worked for me when the PC was getting duplicates of everything on the PCI bus

The cause could be from loading the operating system over a previous setup and the application drivers were not loaded, also if you had problems loading the drivers it will cause this.

Open Device Manager and highlight each device with a exclamation mark and then click the Remove button at the bottom of panel
