DFS Single Share?

Is it possible to set up DFS on a Windows server so that there is only one share after the root? I'd like to have:
...but it seems I am forced to have:

I don't see why this wouldn't work logically since it's just a pointer. Maybe I don't understand DFS properly but this extra folder increases confusion to users.

Replicating the share across multiple servers.

If you want to replicate the shared folder to two or more servers, the folder will need to sit in different shares of the different servers in the domain.

domain.local\sharedx\folder (server x)
domain.local\sharedy\folder (server y)
domain.local\sharedz\folder (server z)

Replicated share
domain.local\folder, user gets connected to appropriate copy on closest server.
They dont know if they are on server \\sharedx, \\sharedy or \\sharedz and don't care.

At least thats basically how the consultant explained itwhen we st it up here in January and I asked basically the same question.
