dialog box crashes

By steve ·
Running XP Home. Suddenly seems that any application crashes after calling for a dialog box. I get a msg referring to comctl32.dll as at least part of the problem. I recently removed a McAfee Firewall system. I've downloaded the "most recent" copy of comctl32.dll. I've also uninstalled several unnecessary apps and will reinstall when problem is solved.

More than likely what has happend is that the dialog box is making a call to the dll but is getting a different version than expected. Like maybe version 1.01 instead of 1.002 or something. The program doesnt understand what is going on because itonly knows that version it is expecting and when it gets something different it causes an error. A few suggestions are:
Find the restore point before the uninstall.
When you say dialog box, I am unsure of what you are talking about, but if this is a program which can be installed again, try doing this.

Anyhow, the most recent copy is probably not what you need. If you need any more help, please post back.

Thanks, crispy1. Dialog box is the pop-up box asking me to choose a further option... e.g. MS Word's box for choosing a document to open. It pops up blank, followed by an error msg to notify Microsoft of the problem.
My "GO-BACK" does not go back far enough. The problem started over a week ago.

then try popping in your windows cd run the compatibility check it will tell you then that an upgrade is needed and try reloading the operating system over itself to reinstall the drivers /dlls this is so you dont wipe out your hard drive and progs and have to start over again this should fix it it is probably windows not registering the file with itself and this will fix/repair your registry entries for this file and then goto add/remove progs delete your windows updates ie..like sp-1 and security fixes/upgrades and redownload them at windows update because windows wont register these off the cd it will only recognize them if you reload them from windows update even though you have them on your computer i had a prob like this and it was apain but this fixed it and i havent had a prob since...

Here's the solution: The comctl32.dll file had been corrupted somehow and needed replacement. Using MyComputer file manager, I renamed comctl32.dll to comctl32.old. Then, using the original install CD for WinXP, I opened a DOS window and ran: expand C:\Windows\System32.dl_ C:\Windows\System32.dll
