A PCMCIA card is a credit card sized card that slides into the side of a laptop.

There are several ways to connect a modem to a computer.

External modems use either a serial or USB port to connect to the computer.

Internal modems for "normal" Desktop PCs use either an ISA or a PCI bus connection.

Modems for laptops use the PCMCIA (PC Card) interface.

The primary difference between a "normal" and a PCMCIA modem is the physical size.
