direct cable link to other computers

By lemke ·
have used serial cable to connect computers together but have problems with the network setup would like to be able to leave them connected but windows does not allow this. would like to be able to get both computers to access the net at the same time so that we can double our research and be able to access the mail with out have it download to one or the other so when we check the mail we donnot end up with each others mail which is usually the case and once it has been accessed from one of the computers we have to go to that computer to go through it and due to windows host and guest setup on direct cable only one computer can access the other this way and have not been able to script around this problem any ideas.

You have a few options- Most preferred get 2 network cards and a hub. Use Win98's internet connect sharing. Or just get a cross over cable to connect the two machines without a hub. For the e-mail, you can always choose leave mail on server so you can pick it up at any machine you choose.

I agree with answer one about getting two network cards and a hub to connect the PCs together and then share the modem. You can pick up network kits that have the hub, cards and cables for a pretty reasonable price. About the mail though. There are several downloadable mail servers on the internet that work well. You download all the mail to one pc and this software will sort it into the correct mailbox, thus allowing everyone to check there own mail. Hope this helps you out.

The first two answers are almost there. You do need two NICs but you can do without the hub if you connect the two machines with a crossover cable-NOT a patch cable (this is an important distinction). Also, only WIN98 SE supports Internet ConnectionSharing. If you're running WIN98 you can buy the SE updates CD from Microsoft for $20.00. The ICS feature alone is worth the cost. If your OS is other than WIN98 or SE I'm afraid you'll have to spring for the cost of a new OS although there is 3rd party software out there that could do the job. I just don't know what it costs.

As with most answers to this question I suggest two NIC cards and a hub. but I then suggest using cybergen's software called sygate v3.1 to run the network instead of internet sharing. why? This is easier to setup for the computer novices and you can buy supporting firewall software called syshield.

Answer 3 is almost there. You only need Win98SE on the computer running the modem. The ICSing client can be installed on Win95/98 via a floppy. Go through the ICS wizard. I'll walk you through this.
