Direct X

By JnlGuy ·
When I run DXDIAG and try and run the test for Direct3D hardware accelerated the system locks up. I can run software rendered with no problem. I have tried this with DirectX 7, 8, and 9 with the same results. I am running the most updated driver with my ATI graphics card.

Win98 SE
256 MB ram

I can't think of anything that has changed on this system. It used to work and now it doesn't. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know what other info is needed to assist in findingthe fix to this problem.

Start by updating / re-installing the AGP mini-port driver for the chip-set on your motherboard.

Then, read the driver notes for your specific ATI card and verify which version of DirectX is supported / required.

If the problems started after updating to DirectX version 9, re-installing Version 7 or 8 DOES NOT remove version 9.

You may need to try the DirectX un-installer from this site:

I do not know if the un-installer works for version 9.If ATI does not support DirectX 9 for your video card, you may end up needing to perform a clean install of Windows.

If so:
Backup all critical files and settings.

Either boot into DOS, and delete ALL files in the Windows folder and sub folders.
(you can leave your favorites and OE files if you wish)
Or, boot from the startup floppy and format the C: drive.

Re-install Windows, drivers, updates, and your applications.
(I also recommend stopping at IE 5.5 SP2 for W98 systems.)
