Disable/Bypass NT 4.0 Workstation LOGON

By Reymundo ·
How do I disable/bypass the initial LOGON in NT when I turn-on my workstation? I use NT at home, my password is blank, and want my workstation to go straight to my desktop. I don't want to have to press CTRL+ALT+DEL and enter a password. I don't need the security at home like I do at work. I think it's somewhere in the Registry, but I haven't been able to find it. It's probably as simple as changing a one to a zero.

Download and install TWEAKUI. It's a lot simpler than editing the registry, and will allow the automatic login and a host of other doo-dads.

I don't beleive there's a way to do that with NT, however win2000 does have that ability. Actually, I don't even remember seeing a tweak utility to disable that.

It can be done in the registry. First, make sure the user you set to auto-logon as has permission to edit the registry, or at least the keys involved here. If that user cannot edit these keys, you cannot shut off the auto-logon later.

All of the following values should be registry strings (REG_SZ)

Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon

Value: AutoAdminLogon
Value data: 1 enables it, 0 disables it.

Value: DefaultDomainName
Value data: the name of the local machine or the domain name.

Value: DefaultUserName
Value data: the username of the user that your want to auto-logon as. (user must exist!)

Value: DefaultPassword
Value data: the password for the user listed in DefaultUserName

If you have novell client on that box, make sure that the the following is also there to be sure that it does not try to logon to the novell system as well

Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell\Login

Value: AutoAdminLogon
Value data: 0

Thanks User Deleted. Your answer was right on target. I had to do two things, which was to add AutoAdminLogon and DefaultPassword. Both were missing from my registry. Thanks again.

The registry key will be located under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WinLogOn
disable by changing the value to 0
