By venkat_sr ·
I have a win2000 primary domain controller (
with AD and 5 fsmo roles attached to it
This also acts as DNS server (AD integrated) , DHCP Server and GC

I have another computer with win2000 ( as additional domain controller

Suppose crashes i want
to take over the roles of so that
my down time is practically zero

If it's a proper BDC....

by DrMicro In reply to Disaster Management plan

you should be okay for domain logon's, group policy, etc., as this should already be mirrored from the PDC to the BDC. If the PDC is unavailable (busy, down, etc.) the BDC should take over after a relatively short delay. Make sure your client host and lmhost files contain mappings to both the PDC and the BDC.

If you have user files on the PDC, mirror them to the BDC. Then, if the users are normally mapped to the PDC user file directory, you can change the mapping to the BDC if the PDC is unavailable. Use the same drive letter on the clients as was for the PDC. You can do this with a logon script.

If the current PDC crashes permanently, you can run DCPROMO and promote the current BDC to a PDC. Make sure you have current backups of all your pertinent data!
