You do not have to use the isp's dns IF you have a dns server setup on your local network. If you have a local server it is easy to set up the dns on it. But, you can not just randomly set the dns without it being set up on your server.

If you have a domain set up locally, you do not want to use the ISP's DNS. You will need to have your own DNS server. If you just have a peer-to-peer setup, it really doesn't matter, but like the other poster said, you have to have DNS installed on the server you choose to use.

Hi,

Domain Name Server, a program running on a server which automatically translates domain names into IP address.Example: when your command www.yahoo.com is sent, it will be translated to IP address is 216.109.112.135. Because user can't remember much all number so everyone create name for ease using.

IF you are using a little of pc at home. u should use your ISP dns server. If it's not automatic get from router you can contact ISP for geeting that.if you have server and a lot of pc using you should create a private dns server. Because it help you access to internet fast or slow. So DNS is very important when setup a system special is big system.
