This is a fairly vague question so it's hard to answer.

1 To Control the Domain.

2 To allow more than 10 concurrent connections at a single time.

3 As a place to install any GP or AD to work on the Domain.

There are a lot more but those are the most obvious and the answers vary depending on what it is you are attempting to do.

What kind of domain controller?

Basically it is to have a centralized "point of contact" so that resources and policies can be doled out efficiently.

central authentication authority, a central way to manage resources on a network. With peer to peer there is no central way to manage resources.
