By hank73 ·
While I am downloading a file it starts out fine then its starts to drop speed. Sometimes it goes all the way to 0.00kps then I get disconnected from my isp. Sometimes I even get disconnected from isp when just trying to load a page.I am running a 233mmx packard bell with windows95 and I have a 56k modem

First check the connections to see if line is plugged in correctly, next you may want to update the modem drivers from the manufacture web site, next contact your ISP to see if their is any problems with staying connected to the server or expierencingany sever problems with service to your area, try changing dial in numbers.

Sounds like you have either a:) a horrible ISP or b:) line noise. The easiest way to find out is to contact the phone company and have them check your line for noise. Depending on your location and billing options, the fee might be waved or charged for a service call. Second thing to save your downloads is go here. It will save you from restarting the download. http://www.gozilla.com/

As SoulRider & GreatPCS mention, your first troubleshooting efforts should be to make sure that you are correctly configured between your home PC and your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Second: You mention you have a PBell w/Win95 and 56k modem, but don't verify that you have upgraded your version of Win95 or your 56k modem to the most recent version of each. Do so, if you haven't already.

Thirdly: You have a Packard Bell .. I can only offer my condolences! You'll have to live withwhat you have, or build out an entirely different system to obtain "normal" expectations.

Enjoy :)
