Downloads In Windows98 SE With IE

What has happened is I tried to download something from tech republic. It downloaded fine. It is a zip file. When I went to open the file it asked me what program I wanted to use to open it. I thought it was a text file so I opened it in MSWORD 2000and it put it in some strange code. Now every time I download something from tech republic it defaults to MSWORD 2000. I need to know how to change this and what program I need to open the downloadable files from this site. Thanks.

The easiest way to fix this is to download WinZip from http://www.winzip.com This will not only fix your file associations upon installation, it will also allow you to open those zip files when you download them.

Winzip’s installation is easy, simply download to a temp directory, then double click on the executable.

The next time you download a file with the extension of .zip, winzip will open it, and give you a choice of where to extract it.

The other, and harder way to fix this problem is to open my computer, click on view, folder options, file types….

but you are still stuck with no way to unzip the files, so download winzip.

Its seems logical enough. I havent tried it yet but I do have winzip on another computer so I’ll take your word for it. Thanks.
