Dropped Network Connection

By ielliott ·
Wasn't sure where to post this, but here's the deal. My computer drops my network connetion to the internet, and my local network i have setup. It seems to do this if there are multiple browser sessions and ftp connections going at once. I have to reboot to get the connection back. I did not have this problem before, but I just had my motherboard and RAM replaced so thats the only thing different. I am have a DSL connection and I have multiple computers going out through a linksys 4 port dsl router. When my computer drops connection the other machines can still get out to the internet with no problem. I will be replacing the network card to see if that make a difference, but I wouldn't think it would work at all if it had a problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's possible for a network card to become partially non-functional. In fact, one of the signs of trouble is such inconsistencies as you describe. Sometimes nics will go bad (still operate) but create broadcast storms on the network and slow down the computer as well. I think you are headed in the right direction by replacing the nic.

Swapped nic cards and it didn't fix anything.

check your duplex settings on your nic card it may be set to half-duplex you want to set it at either full-duplex or auto-detect try this before replacing your nic card

I've noticed that the NIC will release, but will not renew the IP addres. I don't know if this is a windows problem or hardware problem. It seems to drop faster if there is any communication between the computers on my LAN.
