DSL Connection Problems

By eraser3498 ·
Lately I've been having problems with me high speed internet connection. Everything appears to be working but webpages will not display. I've tried everything I could think of such as renewing ip address, reinstalling the interent connection, as well as uninstalling zonealarm and some other suggestion made by my isp. No of which worked. I spent 2 and half on the phone with isp support and they could solve the problem either. I feel like I've done everything accept Wiping and reloading the harddrive. I anyone has any suggestions to solve this problem please let me know thanks. The computer is a P2 350, 64MB of RAM, 20Gig Harddrive, Windows 98.

Which Windows operating system (since you have ZoneAlarm, you must have some version of Windows), and what web browser, Netscape or IE?
Let's start there.

**** away temporary internet files and cookies.
load ad-aware from lavasoft. run it.
If you can try rolling back IE (uninstall it) and see if it works. If so you can re-install it from microsoft.
Check the security settings for the browser.

I hope this helps.

First, I would try re-installing your Windows 98. Not wiping and reloading, but just reinstall the Windows disk. Zone alarm can sometimes do some strange things with Win98. I once spent over an hour with Microsoft (at $35.00/hr) removing a registry hang caused by Zone Alarm. I still think ZA is a good program. Some of your frustration will come from not being able to get some of the troubleshooting items that might help because you have no internet access.
After reinstalling your Win98, the other suggestions of deleting all temp files, temp internet files and cookie files would be the next thing to try before reloading your internet connection software. Good luck. Let us know.

i work internet tech support, and unlike the people who read off of scripts, i actually know what i'm doing.

the first place i'd look when someone called with this problem, and running windows 98, is the network configuration, i'd be willing to bet that for SOME REASON "client for microsoft networks" isn't in there. dont ask me why it dissappears, you are dealing with windows.

to get there double click on the my computer icon
double click on control panel
double click on NETWORK (NOT dialup networking, christ... NETWORK)
and look at that list of things in there.
first, check to see if "client for microsoft networks" is there. if it isn't, that's your problem

if it isn't:
click on add
double click on client
click on microsoft
double click on "client for microsoft networks"
when you click "ok" the comp will do some file copying, and you'll have to restart, then get connected, and see if that works

I have seen problems with zone alarm if you uninstall it before telling it to leave everything open. I would first try the manual uninstall procedures for zone alarm from their website.

Second I would try the IP fix program w2fix.exe that I put on one of my websites for you here:

Third, make sure your connection is not setup for a proxy server. Check Lan Settings under connection.
