My 4 month old DSL connection loses synch about once a week but is solid in between unsynching episodes. The loss of synch is indicated by only the power light on my modem being lit, the modem and data lights are out and this means no communicato’.
Everything according to the DSL techs has been checked and is sat. I am only 6000 feet from my DSLAM card. Modem changed, DSLAM card changed and reassigned to slot 12 farther away from concentrator, line to house changed and bridged from downstream lines (I do not think they are suppose to do this one). Finally after they purchased a new hard drive to keep my account notes on, the tech of techs called and said let me balance your tones. This appears to have worked.
Apparently, if the two modems synch tones get out of balance (what ever that means) the DSLAM card auto repreferences and then can not find itself or my modem. It appears their diagnostic machine for the DSLAM card was not set up properly to balance the tones properly.
It would be very nice if the DSLAM could be resynch’d from the users modem but appearantly can not. Maybe a future idea for a modem manufacturer.
I should add that my service is WA-GTE for DSL and ISP and they have gone out of their way to try and help and it appears that this is just new technology and they do not have everything in full control yet. I also received some credits to my account for the down times. Document the times down as best you can and ask for the credits.
Also, if you can only speed check at around 256kbps there is a limiter on the DSLAM card that needs to be set higher if you should be receiving at a faster rate.
Hope this helps others and if anyone can shed some further light on all of this that’s why I put it here.
Thanks
Mike
