By nixxo_us ·
Hi
Have a dual boot win 98 and 2k each os in diferent hardrives. Can I format win 98 from win 2k, without loosing the mbr information and be able to boot to win 2k without any problems?

Your help will be greatly apreciated.

It is not clear if you want to maintain a dual boot with the described scenario.
Are you trying to reformat WIN98 with WIN2K PRO and maintain a dual boot with WIN2K Server
If WIN2K PRO on one drive and WIN2K Server on the other it will not create a problem, because at least on of the drives will be set active and WIN2K Server can now read FAT32.
WIN2K Pro will reformat the drive with different boot files and Win 98 will be overwritten.
Repost your question and give more info as to what Operating Systems you want to dual boot.

[See previous answer]:

If you install an OS the MBR will be overwritten. If the boot loader of W2K is on the disk with the Win98 OS, be careful: re-installing Win98 will result in an unreachable W2K. If you want to dispose of Win98 and use that partition for W2K you can safely re-format the partition with NTFS, FAT or whatsoever. But DON'T INSTALL ANY OS on that partition or your MBR will be lost!

You should be able to format win98 from win2k provided that your win2k can see your win98. In doing that make sure you have emergency rescue disk for win2k. In case all the mbr information is actually residing on the drive where you have your win98.I am guessing that you most likely to have your win98 on your primary master harddrive. Whatever the case, it should be possible.
