Duplicating Desktop Shortcuts

By evsears ·
My son has a Pansonic Tuff Talker (w/a Touch Screen). All of a sudden it started duplicating the desktop shortcuts (17 times each) and wound up deleting everything in My Documents, including subdirectories and their contents. We checked w/Norton and no virus. Any ideas?

Thanks for the attempted assist but I ran Norton (yes, it is updated) and there is no virus.

wowee. you absolutely SURE no virus? you have the latest definitions downloaded? you've scanned at the command prompt by booting from norton CD, or diskette? or in safe mode? i never heard of such a thing that wasn't a virus...if you would like morehelp with searching for a virus, let us know...off the top of my head i would suspect w32magistr...

Yep, checked everything I can find. It further baffles the mind in that it disappeared after I rebooted changing the msconfig. I started with a Selective Startup and unselected Win.INI and Start.ini. Then after everything cameup, I changed msconfig back to Normal. Now everything works. At least for the time being. Never heard of a virus doing that either. I have no idea either. Totally mind-boggling. Thanks for the assist though.
