E-mail Delay

We have recently upgraded our Exchange server from 5.5 to 2003. Users including myself have gotten the followinf message when sending an e-mail to an external address:

"Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed"

If anyone knows how to resolve this issue I would appreciate it.

This is a normal notification that is sent by the server when message delivery has been delayed for a specified period of time. The default delay notification interval is 12 hours -meaning that you will receive this message if your outgoing message hasn't been delivered within 12 hours. The system continues to try to deliver the message until the expiration timeout period which is 2 days by default, I think. Now, if you are getting this message on EVERY outgoing email, then you definitely have a problem. If that's the case, the problem likely exists with your SMTP service on the Exchange server, but there are a lot of other possibilities as well.

If you want to change the notification and expiration intervals, or prevent delay notifications entirely, open the Exchange Manager and navigate to Protocols/SMTP/Default SMTP Virtual Server. Right click the Default SMTP Virtual Server, click Properties and go to the Delivery tab. This is where all the settings are for retries, delay notifications and expiration.
