Easicleaner Utility

By Dana Bensen ·
I downloaded a utility that was advertised in Techrepublic called 'Easicleaner'. It's a little utility to clean up invalid references from uninstalled applications in the Win9x/Winnt registry. It apparantly has been downloaded by quite a few Techrepublic members.

I have come across a fair number of freeware programs, however, that contain Trojan Horse viruses.

Has anybody used this utility? What are your opinions of it? Is it Trojan free?

I'm not familiar with "Easicleaner", but if you concerned about reg checkers that are Trojan free, why not use the checker's that come with Windows?

For Win95, Win98 & WinNT, there's MSRegClean. See:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q147/7/69.asp?RLD=30

For Win98 you can also use ScanRegW.exe.

These program check for and "Fix" orphans in the Registry and I'm reasonable sure the Evil Empire is not out to spread Trojan horses. (but then I could just be deluding myself).

Hi, I have not used the utility you mention and the main reason is because it is 3rd party freeware. Often, freeware programs insert a "parasite" (not a trojan per se) into the registry (and/or hard drive) so the freeware company can track your browsing habits and aggregate data is passed to advertisers. I run "optout" from http://grc.com/default.htm This is a small app that scans your registry and drives looking for "spyware." Now you could download the freeware program you want and then run optout. See what it finds and you have the option of leaving things as is or having the program delete the freeware entries. I also recommend regclean by microsoft. It's fast and creates an undo file. I hope this helps.

I'm not sure if it is the same program, but I have used "Easy Cleaner" (note the different spelling, which is why I asked) for a while now and have had no problems. It's really no better or worse than Microsoft's RegClean from what I have found, although I do use the two in conjunction occasionally to try and fix a really stubborn registry problem. Just my two cents worth...
