Effects of VLAN Broadcast Control on Use

By goatts ·
If I implement VLAN's on a network for broadcast control, computers on VLAN #2 will no longer see broadcasts from computers on VLAN #1. What effect does this have on the end user? Thanks!

VLAN1 and VLAN2 will no longer:
-Be able to see or access each other (without a router).
-Receive each others bcasts, so bcast Nebeui node types will fail, hopefully you use a WINS server. But that would be OK unless the two VLANS have to access each other.

All other network traffic between clients and servers will be ok.

I would agree with user deleted, that is if you're using a router. However, Antivirus updates and remote control software do not use broadcasts, but rather UDP or TCP sessions and would not have to be configured on the router. The DHCP broadcasts will have to be configured to be passed to the DHCP server, using that iphelper.

I'm assuming that you will be using a router to route traffic from one VLAN to the Other.

If you are using DHCP on both segment but only have one DHCP server on one of the segments you will need to configure your router to allow those DHCP broadcast to be routed through your router. Depending on your router, Cisco and Cabletron will use an IPHELPER command.

You might need to configure your router to allow other types broadcast traffic to be routed, ie. Remote Control software, Antivirus update software

I hope that helps...

Ken
