I was wondering if anybody has had any experience capacity planning for an email server. Specifically, I was wondering about determining disk space quotas for each person that would be using the email server. I know that this is going to depend on software and hardware, but didn’t know if there might be a good rule of thumb, or if there are web resources that show some benchmark testing for specific software/hardware combinations that can be used as a starting point. I’m unfortunately administering an email server that has no current limits setup, and users that have 5 GB of email can’t understand why they are having performance issues. They also don’t seem to believe that enforcing quotas may be a standard practice at other organizations.
