This is usually a driver issue. Most of the time if invalid characters are being printed it’s a wrong driver. Obviously if you have more than one printer driver installed amke sure you’re using the correct one. But if the driver becomes corrupt or when having problems like this it’s best to uninstall the driver and delete the files when prompted. Reinstall the driver and in the case of Epson printers follow the instructions closely. There’s also the print manager that may be needed. If you don’t have the drivers they can be obtained at the following link. The link to instructions for winME are after that.

I had a ‘strange’ character problem once that was caused by a bad install CD.
It installed a corrupt default printer font.
The printer mfg assured me that the problem was inside the printer, and that I would need to take it in for service.
They refused to give me a list of files that the driver installed on my PC.Anyhow, after a drive format and clean install of the printer driver, the strange characters went away.
So, if you can identify ALL the files that are part of the printerdriver, and un-install / remove them, and install the latest driver from Epson, your problem may go away.

One other possibility is the printer cable. How long is it? If it’s over 6 feet that could be the problem. Also, check the cable path to make sure it doesn’t run by any equipment that could be generating interference.

The 850 uses the WinXP drivers. Remove the Printer and reinstall from the XP CD.
