Error 29506 while installing SQL Server Management Studio Express

I’m trying to install SQL Server Management Studio Express on my PC running Windows XP Professional (SP2). Every time I try running it fails with an error at the very end of the installation.It ends with an error “The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package.This may indicate a problem with this package.The error code is 29506”. I tried looking for a solution everywhere. Some suggested running the file (here its an .msi file) from the command prompt with Administrator privileges. I tried that and it is still giving the same error.

  Run the command prompt as an administrator and launch the .msi file from there to install the management studio.

    Thansk a lot. Running it from CMD(as an Administrator) worked for me. 🙂

      Since I was logged in as an Administrator I did not see the value in actually right-clicking the Command Prompt and selecting Run As Admin… Yet that was all it took. Too simple for a learned loremaster…
      Thanks again – sorry I doubted.
      FYI I am installing SQLServer2005_SSMSEE_x64.msi and I am installing on Windows 7.

    Like rclowe, I was installing SQLServer2005_SSMSEE_x64.msi on Windows 7 when I encountered the 29506 error. Your fix worked a treat!

    Thanks, that did it for me too….completely forgot that User Account Control was still fully enabled.

  This is how it worked for me
  
  Had to move the file in drive C, after running cmd (command prompt) As Admin, I entered this text:
  
  msiexec.exe -i C:\the file name
  
  pressed enter.
  
  Hope it helped.
