Event ID 5504

By mrobinson ·
In the DNS Server Event Viewer, I am receiving a 5504 warning - "The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a packet from 64.80.203.194. The packet is rejected."

What is the best way to stop this from occurring?

Thanks,
Mike

This is coming up frequently nowadays due to the large amount of DNS cache pollution going on. (DNS is such a secure, reliable, un-hackable system...)

Microsoft has a KB article about how to stop this, or reduce it at least, but you may always see these occasionally, due to problems in the lookup or response from remote servers.

Hope this helps.

Can I stop these events?

by mukulag In reply to

I am running my DNS server on Win2K SP4.
I have also configured my DNS cache against pollution as described in MS KS article.

However I am still getting these events. Can I ignore these?

An answer to this query would greatly reduce my concern.
