Exchange In Place Upgrade using new hardware

by talbright24 . Updated 17 years ago

Hello, I’m hoping to get some help on an exchange upgrade. We will be installing a new Exchange server and migrating our mailboxes from an Exchange 2000 server.

Here is our scenario:

We have a Windows 2000 native domain level with some 2003 Domain controllers. All FSMO roles are on the only remaining Windows 2000 server.

I believe that adprep /forestprep & adprep /domainprep have already been run on this domain to extend the schema since there are already 2003 domain controllers, but would like to be sure. If there is a way to know that, I would appreciate being able to double check.

My second question is, right now, we have only one Exchange 2000 Server and it is in Mixed mode. Do I need to be in Native mode before installing the Exchange 2003 Server?

Third, if the FSMO roles can remain on the Windows 2000 server, (I know it is not recommended to have them all on one server, but the bosses don’t want to move them if we don’t have to…) is it OK to run setup /forestprep and setup /domainprep from the Exchange 2003 server cd on that Windows 2000 domain controller?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Tracy
