Explorer crashes under ADMIN logon

By dubdha ·
HELP, we are experiencing some rather strange things on our network at present and would greatly appreciate any help in solving these problems.

We are running Win 98/95 machines with Netware 4.11 and the 321 client
with Zen and NAL Application Launcher. Restrictions in place for users are NO Favorites, Documents, Printer setup etc just the normal restrictions really; Admin of course has none. We have installed the updates for Windows already

First:-
As mentioned in a previous discussion, but still have no answer for.
We are losing our Desktop Start menu Program list when we install a new program onto an existing machine. Once rebooted all we have in the program list is the newly installed program all others that were there are now gone from sight.

Second:-
We are now having our boxs crash whenever we click on or try to open IExplorer, Explorer, My Documents, My Computer. This only happens though when we are logged on as ADMIN. Users who have Admin rights do not experience this problem nor do any of the normal user logons. HELP!!!!!!!!

Explorer crashes under ADMIN logon

I don't think this will be much help but here goes.....Searching Novell Tech support had several documents about crashes on the desktop. They mostly had to do with a wrong, or corrupted dll's and NALEXPD (old versions). You may want to apply the latest patches for the ZenWorks and try the Novell Client 3.3 Beta..I have used 3.3 and it seems to work better than 3.21.

Also you chould limit logins to Admin to a minimun. Build a Administrators Group and give it security rights of admin. Thenassign the users that do the admin to this group. We only allow Admin login for server setup and backups.....Everyone else uses thier own login.......Hope this helps....Chuck

Explorer crashes under ADMIN logon

I'm afraid this wasn't much help to us, as we don't want to upgrade to new client yet as we will need more memory to cope. What we've got now is just making the grade. Plus with the fact that we can not log on as ADMIN and get to explorer isn't helping. We thought that the users with admin rights had full rights but as it turns out they haven't got so we are unable to do repair work thru them either , some has been accomplished thru DOS but we are still getting kicked out of Explorer and teh program problem is getting worse.
Now we aren't even getting the newly installed programs just whatever was showing before we installed new program.
HELP PLEASE!!

Explorer crashes under ADMIN logon

Not sure on the first one - I have never seen this. Make sure you make a copy of the c:\windows\start menu folder before you install something, and then copy it back (making sure you don't wipe the new shortcuts) after the installation.

2nd point - There is no reason for the crashes, unless there is something in admin's login script, which doesn't appear in the other login scripts. Compare them for anything obvious. If there is nothing obvious, then REM out every line in admin's script, and try again. If it works, introduce lines back in 1 by 1.

Remember to check for the presence of all the different login scripts:

1. Container (the container where your admin user resides)
2. Profile
3. User

Hope this is of some help!

Robin
