Explorer errors

By Chester Peterson ·
I have a Plll 800, 256mb, 20gb running WIN98.
When ever i open control panel an EXPLORER error message comes up saying "the program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down".
There is no conflicts and I have done a SFC.EXE which came up clean.
Any ideas?

You could try just installing windows over the top without formatting. That way you won't loose any programs or information.

Can you boot at Safemode? In safemode, is there still a problem there?
--If it run normal in safemode i think the application is the cause of it..

First try to make some changes to your application. Starting Uninstalling one of the Application then reboot and see what program is causing this. You should also remove some start-up files which you do not need. (at the MSCONFIG, Runservice in the registry, win.ini and System.ini)

--If you can't run in safe mode, follow the Answer No. 1.

At this time if you i can give you a two (2) option.
1. Go on to swapping method, to check if there is a faulty hardware that can cause that message (most cases the memory).

2. Start from formatting...

Note this option has some impact to you.
If you go with no.1 -
Good - it is safe, and the best way and you will find weather it is faulty hardware.
Bad - You need a spare for that hardware.

If you go with no.2 -
Good - You will also find it what is the cause. Here is the hint, running setup (Win98 Installer) and giving you a BLue Screan Error Message, or any error. it is commonly caused by the Hardware, Compatibility Issue.
Bad - There is a important data at your drive and you don't want to trash it. But if you have a sparehard drive which is no important data on it. Try used it for a while, to make some good steps.

ELOBORATE MY ANSWER AND YOU WILL FIND YOUR OWN MADE IDEA.
