Ext Modem US Robotics

By shaun_davies ·
I have an External US Robotics 56K Message Modem which now has the ARQ/ Fax light flashing green. I have never seen it do this before and whenever I try and dial out my PC reports it as not working. Can I unlock this or can you tell me what it is doing. I have tried leaving it of for a few hours wthout much success. Do I chuck it and buy another modem?? Thanks

Shaun, have you had any luck? does the light come on even when the pc is off? If so then yeah the modem has issues since no software could be running, otherwise awake on ring in power management may be an issue to look at also?

Turned out someone had sent a fax to it which was unable to be downloaded. I tried to get the pc to download after a minute it gave up and works fine since. I did get this from 3 com though. Hope this may help someone else int he future
Thank you for contacting U.S.Robotics. Your satisfaction is of the utmost importance to us.

From the desktop, click on Start and Run.
Type 'Hypertrm'*
Type 'TEST' in name field and click OK
In field 'CONNECT USING' choose the option 'DIRECT TO COM (which modem is attached to) and click OK
Change 'BPS' to 57600, and click OK

*If file not found, you would need to install HyperTerminal from the Windows disk provided with your PC.

You should access a blank white screen, with the cursor flashing in upper left-hand corner and the status "CONNECTED" at the bottom of the screen.

In HYPERTERMINAL, type:

ATE1 enter (you will not see characters on screen, and modem will respond with OK)
AT&F1 enter
AT+MEM enter
ATZ! enter

Exit Hyperterminal. Check status.

First, what exactly is the error you receive when the modem fails to connect? If gives error, write it down and if you have another pc w/internet connection go to www.modemhelp.net (great site for errors and init strings) hit control+alt+delete to bring up task mgr. see if there is rnaapp running in backround (only should be seen here when in use, dialing. could of been hit with power surge causing it to hang), end task it, then reboot and try to connect.
Second, uninstall/reinstall.
third, check device mgr. any conflicts?
