Unless you are using ISDN or something of that nature the best connection you're goign to get through a regular analog phone line is about 53KB per sec. You can slightly bump up the speed of your modem if you go into Start--> Control Panel--> System--> Device Manager. Click the plus next to your modem. Right-click the name of your modem and select "properties". Within that, click on the "Modem" tab and change your maximum speed to 115200. This will ensure that your modem won't hit a cielingif you get a better than average connection on your phone line.

Your modem is probaly conecting at the best rate right now for a 56k modem settings, standards are set for modem connection speeds and also interference in phone line plays a part in connecting, the ISP also has a part in your modem speed.Try the setting from answer one but donot expect much improvement if any.

Moving your baud rate higher than 57600 can cause connection problems with your ISP...leave them where you have them and consider yourself lucky to get the 43,000. Many of us suffer the 31,200 and 28,800 ceiling imposed on us by our line queality.

115kbps is not possible for a connection setting. 53kbps is the maximum for a 56kbps modem. By selecting "Compress Data", you can download at a faster than 53kbps rate if the computer that you are talking to compresses the data.

The fastest connection speed can be attained by removing all "Extra Settings" in the Advanced Configuration. The "Extra Settings" parameters can inhibit your ability to connect at the fastest speed because of selecting error free communication. Don't worry about trying to connect with error free communication. Connecting at a faster rate, with a few communication errors is much faster than connecting at a slower rate with no communication errors.

You've confused the speed of the port with the speed of your modem. Your modem negotiates a speed with the remote system less than 53Kbps (due to FCC limitations). When some computers show something like 115Kbps, they're telling you the port speedrather than the speed of the modem's connection. There is no way to up your connection speed that is 100% sure-fire short of subscribing to broadband or DSL.

BTW, if you still want to up the port speed, go to Control Panel ->System ->Device Manager -> Ports (Com & LPT), double-click the desired port, choose the Port Settings tab, and the first roller is "bits per second." I don't advise messing with this if everything seems to be working.
