Was recently assigned to manage an old dell server but did not receive any documentation or setup information for it. It’s a Dell Power Edge 2650 server (with OS Windows NT 4.0 SP6).
There are 4 physical disks and from what I read in the Event Viewer log they are setup as RAID5. It has a failed disk (amber light on disk) but the web site & database on it are still running. This server has no array management software and so far I haven’t been able to download / successfully install anything similar (because of Windows NT). So I can’t see how these disks are configured. I “think” one of the 3 disks that are in use at the moment might be a hot spare which kicked in when Disk 0 failed.
I wanted to remove the failed disk and replace it with another larger size disk but as I am not 100% sure of the disk configuration I’m not sure if this would affect the server/data in anyway. Is it safe for me to replace the disk or is there any other way I can look at the disk configuration (without rebooting the server)?
