Faulty A Drive?

By arichart ·
Got a computer here that I was trying to format & install W98SE onto. Everything went great until it was time to try and install a driver from the A Drive. For some reason whenever you try to access the disk drive the computer completely locks up. Seems weird since the disk drive works just fine before windows is installed (ie dos commands, fdisk, etc). Seen this before?

Faulty A Drive?

Been there, dealt with it.

You need to install the drivers for the chip-set on the motherboard.
If a name brand system, check the manufactures web site for drivers.
Otherwise, use the motherboard or chip-set manufactures drivers.

Windows 98 more so than other versions of Windows does not have good default drivers.

To verify that you do not have a hardware issue, see if you can boot from the floppy.
If you can boot, you do NOT have a hardware issue.

Drivers were ok. I don't know why, but it started working after a fresh OS install. Thanks anyway!

I've seen this sort of behaviour when dealing with a suspect floppy disk. Try copying the files off the disk on another computer. Reformat the disk in the win98 machine then copy the files back from the other computer.

This happens no matter what disk I use.

Befor trying to install windows copy the drivers to the Hard drive. Then do the install and when it asks for the driver point to the location where you stored it.

The floppy driver isn't the problem, I am trying to install a driver for a NIC after Windows is installed. Floppy drive works fine before Windows, but locks up when trying to access it after windows is installed.

Could it be a bad floppy. Can you read this floppy in other computers. Can you read other floppies in this computer. It would apperar that your hardware is good if you can runb DOS from it.

A fresh OS install along with new Boot Disk did the trick, thanks!
