Fax Though Cable Modem?

By tcarlyle ·
When we rented our office space, we had a cable modem installed, and discovered it was more cost-effective to use cellular phones than to have a land line installed.

Now we are wondering if there is a web-based service in existence that "leases" their phone line for short bursts, such as the time needed to send or receive a fax (we still have some customers who insist on communicating this way).

Ideally, I would see this service as offering to "turn your cable-connected computer into a telephone" with no phone line required.

A good resource to check for Fax Over IP (FoIP) information is http://www.internet-telephony.org/fax_over_ip/.

While it is possible to accomplish what you are asking, I would personally recommend installing a traditional fax machine even in addition to a FoIP solution. There are numerous reasons for this including simple redundancy if your cell phones or network fail for any reason. It may also be a requirement to participate in some of the FoIP networks.

THANKS!! You're a gem. The resources you provided were exactly what the doctor ordered. I may be a bit premature in the grand scheme of things, but I feel traditional phone service is overpriced and under-usefull. We just needed a workaround for theoccasional need to send an old-fashioned fax.
