Is your hard drive partitioned right now? Or does it all show up as one drive? There's no reason to partition it out, unless your want to. You can just format the hard drive, and reinstall windows. You should back up your personal files, but thats about it. You should have disks with the drivers for your hardware. If not, go to www.driverguide.com, and get the drivers that you need. If you've never formatted a hard drive before, boot up with a boot disk, put the windows cd in your cdrom. at the a: prompt, type and at the d: prompt type CD WIN98 at the d:\win98 prompt, type FORMAT C: and enter y to confirm. after its done, hit enter for no label, and from the d:\win98 prompt, type SETUP.

You said in your post that you have 98 bad clusters. Format may help as a temporary thing as it will attempt to recover the bad cluster on the drive but in my experience your hard drive has likely gone bad and will not stay stable after you re install the operating system. You may have to have the drive replaced. You can run a diagnostics of the drive via Maxtor or Fujitsu or whoever the manufacturer is (they have software) to be sure but the outcome is likely to be the same. Good Luck

Hi,
It sounds like you need to run FDISK from your bootable floppy. This is the program which will let you make a FAT partition (which is needed before you can format the drive)

I agree with the other posts in that having bad clusters, may be signs of a Hard drive dying & may soon fail. If you bought a new drive & arre installing or you used FDISK to remove the current partition table then you will need to use FDISK to re-partition your drive before you can Format it as DOS won't be able toFormat your drive until it has a valid FAT partition.

VERY IMPORTANT: be very careful using FDISK as it will remove all data on the partition you are working with.

It's possible the clusters were incorrectly marked. Once a cluster is marked as bad, ScanDisk will never look at it again until either it is marked as good or you force it. If you're brave enough to edit your registry, try this after making backup copies of the registry:

Modify the following registry key with Regedit:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\CheckDrive\Settings

Modify the Settings value so the last two digits are "04" for example, if the setting is:
B1 03 40 00 then change it to B1 03 40 04

Then run scandisk again and have it do a surface scan. It'll re-test the bad clusters and let you decide what to do with them, in case they're not really bad. There's a good MS Knowledge Base article on this also: Q256986

Its hard to give a perfect answer without knowing the programs, the data, and anything else that you've accumulated.

In general practice... if you kept your personal files in one location, you would copy those files to floppy disks.

Programs that are installed, usually install under C:\Program Files, and you should have your original program disks to reinstall these.

The hard drive is already partitioned from the previous install, you will only need to format the drive. If the partition table is corrupted, you can type: fdisk /mbr to try and repair it. And usually typing fdisk /mbr won't damage anything.

The suggestion that if you have bad clusters already and that the drive may be dying is quite possible and you should be prepared for this!!

If this is a normal desktop computer, and even though you can't afford a pc tech, you may be able to afford an inexpensive hard disk.

Check a local computer show (if you have them in your area) or look for a local inexpensive shop or even look at stores like Best Buy or Circuit City for sales.. or look for closouts. You're looking for something with at least as much space as you had before.

IF you can get another drive.. take your old one out of the computer for now!

Use the NEW drive to install your windows... if you put a NEW drive into the system and boot from the windows CD, it will PROMPT you to FDISK and FORMAT automatically.

again..IF you go this route...then you will be able to put your OLD harddrive back in after the install is complete, and take data off of it!!

This means you won't loose it accidentally trying to backup etc.. once you *format* the drive... your chances of getting data from it go down exponentially, while the cost of doing so INCREASES exponentially!

**LAST NOTE** after the reinstall you MUST remember to get ALL updates as soon as possible to protect yourself from internet viruses & worms!!

Actually.. I mean.. you MUST remember to get ALL updates to protect you **AND** the rest of the internet users from viruses and worms.

Worms would use your *un patched* applications and operating system to spread to other machines out there. So you have a responsibility to yourself and others.

(sorry for the holier than thou preaching but if everyone *DID* do this then the worms and virus's wouldn't spread as easily as they do!)
